Q. I have a sliding door roller with a broken wheel. How do I remove the old wheel to replace it?
A. You probably need to replace the whole wheel assembly. If you need to replace just the wheel you will still need to remove the whole wheel assembly from your sliding door. Once you get the roller assembly out of the door you should be able to work the wheel out of the housing for replacement.
Q. My Andersen window will not open. If you give the window a little push from closed position it seems to work fine.
A. Your window could be out of square and is rubbing. You might need a carpenter familiar with Anderson windows to look at it. Check to see if there's any rubbing on the window sash or frame. Maybe you can file down the spot where it rubs, but remember you could damage the frame if you are not careful.
Q. I have several storm windows with broken corner tabs. They seem to be stamped into the extrusion in 2 places on each side. Can you please tell me how to replace these tabs?
A. To remove old stamped tilt corner keys such as the 95-008 from frame: Step 1) remove screen-wire or glass Step 2) slide frame in a vice mounted at the end of a table Step 3) with a slot screw driver or chisel, insert end of tool behind the broken corner and with a hammer bang out the old tilt corner. Step 4) insert new corner Step 5) lay frame flat on metal plate and with a nail set and hammer, punch the corner to secure in frame.
Q. I have 1 window that the Glass slats open that I need opener for. One is comletly missing, the other cranks but does not open . The glass strips are about 3" wide and 24" long.
A It sounds like you have a jalousie window. Match up the jalousie window operator you do have to the product picture of the jalousie window operators on DoorsWindowsHardware.com. If you need help, send pictures and measurements of your crank operator to email@example.com
Q. We are doing away with our door mail slot and need to find a blank plate to fit over the hole in the door. Do you have any suggestions?
A. A possible fix could be a brass kick plate to cover the door bottom and overlap the mail slot hole. Contact our research team at firstname.lastname@example.org to see what we have available.
Q. Do you sell anything to replace the window stops for vinyl tilt windows? The ones I have are vinyl, and they just snap in to the channel that the pivot lock shoe rides in.
A. Have you looked at out catalog of sash stops and take out clips? If you still don't see it you can send us pictures of your window and what stops you have in it now, and we'll see how we can help. The e-mail address for our Research Team is: Info@DoorsWindowsHardware.com
Q. Do I need to replace spiral balance or just adjust it? I have 5 tilt windows in my house, all of which drop down when you try to open them. Do I need to replace the balances, or simply adjust or charge the existing balances?
Q. How old are your balances? Window support balances do wear out overtime. A twenty year lifespan is very good and since you report that the windows used to stay up perfectly I would not increase the strength of your spiral balances. If you increase the strength too much, your windows may not stay down. To determine the exact replacement you will need start here, by choosing if you have a tilt or non-tilt window. After you finish that question you will be asked more questions to help determine the appropriate replacement spiral balance for your windows.
Q. I have a forever storm door and need a replacement key for it. How can I get one?
A. I would suggest contacting a locksmith in your area, maybe he can supply you. We don't carry any replacement keys.
Q. We just bought a beach condo and the rolling screen doors will not work due to build of sand and salt air/water. Are there any better alternatives to replacing the plastic wheels or buying new doors?
A. We have found that salt and sand will always be a problem for sliding doors. This is something that will require yearly maintenance regardless of the product.
Q. I have 26 frames of glass jalousies and where the glass slides into the frame they are riveted and they are old and breaking up. Do you have any replacement frames or any way to fix them?
A. It might be time to purchase a new window. However with that being said, it is not impossible to repair the louvers in a jalousie window. I would suggest using some type of pop-rivet to reconnect your louver back to the window. You may be able to find replacement louvers, but it might be hard to find ones that line up for you and most jalousie window manufactures are no longer in business.
Q. What is the difference between an insert window and a standard, full frame window?
A. An insert window is installed into the existing window frame. Insert replacement windows are installed without disturbing the interior trim or exterior of your home. Full frame replacement windows are appropriate when the entire window needs replacement—for example, when it's substantially out of square or has deteriorated beyond repair. The window, including sash, frame and casing is replaced.
Q. Recently had a new sliding door installed, and they left off the weather strip plug. I have no instructions so do not know where it should have been installed or how important the plug is?
A. The weather strip plug goes into the top track and attaches to the stationary door where the two doors meet in the center. It is made to fill the top void above the stationary door.
Q. I have a sliding door handle and the handles are fine but the lock keeps slipping when it's open and it locks the door inappropriately. Is there anything that can be done to fix or replace the lock?
A. Unfortunately there is no latch adjustment to tighten this sliding door handle latch.
Q. I have a vinyl replacement window and the handle came off and I don't know if it will pop back in or if the whole lock is broken. The problem is that the window will not open because the handle broke in lock position. help!
A. You are in a pickle. See if you can push the broken handle back into the housing and try to unlock the window. If that does not work try using a screw driver or possibly a pair of pliers. Remember to always use eye protection when doing any repairs in case a part breaks off and goes flying at you.
Q. Do my Spiral Balances need to be lubricated periodically? If so, what should be used?
A. Normally it is not necessary to lubricate spiral balances unless the windows are in constant use or near water. You can use white lithium grease or Three-In-One oil on the spiral. If you want to lubricate the track the window sash rides in, use silicone spray.
Q. Is there a special tool to activate and deactivate a tilt latch locking mechanism?
A. You will need a Tri-Wing tool bit.
Q. I recently purchased a house, and none of the windows will stay up.Could balances all be broken and need replacing or do they just need to be charged with a winding tool?
A. We recommend our customers use a charging tool to charge the balances. If that does not seem to help, you will need to replace them.
Q. Are the rollers on the top of the window necessary? I think you have the rollers for my 35 year old slider windows I have been looking for. There seems to be a set of rollers on top and the bottom.
A. We do not believe you would need rollers on top of your sliding window. The top rollers may be for in case you installed the sliding window in a different position.
Q. My door is 9'(3- 36" panels) X 94" high. I cannot find the manufacturer"s name or model # anywhere on the door. Aside from removing the door, is there any way to tell which rollers will fit the door?
A. Unfortunately there is no way around removing the door. The easiest way to find the parts you need is to send pictures and measurements to: email@example.com, and we'll search our database of over 100,000 replacement parts and see if we can find a match.
Q. Does the storm door hinge kit require special tools?
A. No, you do not need any special tools to install the storm door hinge pin kit. You may need the aid of basic tools to help you remove the old hinge and snap on the new hinge.
Q. How do I remove the handle from this window? The Handle broke and now I can get it off.
A. You will have to open the window to get to the screws, because they are screwed in from the back of the window lock. Can you try to push the broken handle of the lock back into place and try to unlock the window? Possibly force a screw driver into the lock and turn it. I know from experience it's not an easy fix.
Q. I replaced my screen door rollers last year with ones I purchased at my local hardware store and when I removed them, completely rusted and broken. I live near the ocean and was wondering if you have any rollers that might hold up longer in the salt air
A. Often times this problem can be solved by using a stainless steel spring. We are currently researching a replacement. If you are interested in having us contact you when we find something more durable, please send an info request to: Info@DoorsWindowsHardware.com
Q. Can you install a lock to prevent window from opening other than just the handle itself?
A. Try to install a screw with some washers into the window track to act as a governor. This may prevent the window from opening all the way. This is just a suggestion, as I cannot guarantee this will work with your window.
Q. Should the spirals be lubricated? How often and with what? It seems the old spirals get very sticky and I am sure contributes to the breakage.
All spiral balances do come pre-lubricated. After a few years it is not a bad idea to clean and add new grease to your spiral balances. You will want to use a grease that will stick on to the spiral. As long as you use a grease that sticks on the spiral, this is not a process that you will need to perform often. WD-40 is a popular lubricant but is not a good lubricant for spiral balances because it is too thin. Stop by your local mom & pop hardware store for a recommendation of a grease that will perform well.
Q. Does Neutral mean that a tile-latch can be use for both left and right hand side?
A. Yes it does. You can flip the tongue depending on what side of the window you need to use the latch on.
Q. I have an old aluminum framed patio door 110"x80' with missing rollers. How do I know which product I need to purchase?
Are you positive the rollers are missing from your patio door? The wheels could have been worn down completely flat but the housing should still exist. It is a lot easier to find a replacement patio door roller if you have a sample.
Q. I have 3 sliding screens on Pella doors. Can I replace the screens myself? Is there a guide? Tips or techniques? The screen itself is fiberglass and the spline is beige. How do I know what size of the spline? Does it need to be replaced as well?
A. Any type of screen repair takes some skill. The hardest part is keeping the door square, check the diagonal on the screen by taking measurements from corner to corner similar to an X design. On a Pella repair I would try to reuse the same spline, I know of some Pella doors that had a square spline which is hard to match.
Q. Do I measure the wheel diameter at the bottom of the wheel groove, where the wheel rolls on the track, or on the outside rim of the wheel?
A. I believe all the wheels are measured by the outside diameter of the wheel, not the inside groove.
Q. Where Can I Buy Replacement Parts for my Marvin/OEM Windows?
A. Replacement parts, such as hardware and screens, can be ordered through WeFixItUSA.com, or DoorsWindowsHardware.com
Q. Can you tell me how to adjust the extension of the pivot bars(how far they stick out) so that they fit into the pivot shoes properly and don't damage them?
A. I do not know exactly which pivot bar you have, however, most pivot bars have a line on the end which shows how far in they push into the pivot shoe. Rule of thumb is that the pivot bar sticks out approximately 1/2" past the window sash.
Q. How do I adjust the spiral balance on my Tilt Windows?
A. If your tilt windows require adjustment, such as sash dropping or pulling up, or if the spiral rod is disengaged, adjustment is simple: Tilt sash downward to expose balance shoe. Disengage rod from shoe. Do not disconnect rod from tensioning tool. Rotate rod slightly to the right. At the same time, pull rod downward. Slip rod away from the pivot lock shoe. If sash is dropping, add tension by rotating rod clockwise. Do not exceed more than two full turns at a time, doing both sides equally. Reconnect rod, repeat process if needed. If sash is pulling up, less tension is required. do both sides equally; rotate rod counter-clockwise one turn. Reconnect rod; repeat process if needed. If rod is disconnected from shoe then apply tension to both sides equally, not exceeding four turns at a time.
How do I replace my pivot lock shoes?
A. There are a few different ways to replace pivot lock shoes. One way I do NOT recommend but used by some window contractors is to use a heat gun. You can use the low heat setting on a heat gun or hair dryer (be very careful because you can warp the vinyl track if you overheat it, if the vinyl track warps your window will not function properly). Another way would be to cut out a notch in the track just large enough to fit the pivot lock shoe (again be very careful to only notch behind the window stops located at the top of the main frame for the bottom sash and the bottom of the main frame top sash, if you cut in the wrong area in the track, you will impede the operation of the window). We recommend a tool called a jamb spreader. When used properly, the jamb spreader can replace the pivot shoe with no damage to the window track. If you perform any work on your window yourself, always wear safety glasses. If you need help, call a local window repair contractor to assist you with your window repair.
Q. How do I remove and replace pivot lock shoes?
A. For lower/inner sash there should be a cut out at the top of master-frame, it may be behind the sash stop, if not cut to slide the pivot lock shoe out/in. For upper/exterior sash there should be a cut out at bottom of master frame, it may be behind the sash stop, if not cut to slide the pivot lock shoe out/in.
Q. I have ordered a track cover to repair a damaged track in a patio door of unknown manufacturer. Should I file or otherwise modify the damaged portion before installing the cover?
A. The Track Cover should snap onto the top portion of the track. If the existing track is very worn you may want to apply a couple inches of silicone into the track cover at each end to prevent the cover from lifting up at ends. Or by crimping the ends only with a vise grip after installation, this will help the track cover stay on. Yes, you should file if any part of the track is bent out-wards the line.
Q. I would like to order a couple of channel balances but need instructions for proper removal and install. I have removed a couple but am sure installation will be difficult. Do you know of a resource for instructions?
A. How to replace a channel balance Removing Channel Balances Remove sash stop from top of jamb, (not all windows have sash stops). Pop the take-out clips on both sides. Raise the sash above the bottom balance guides; push sash to left or right and swing out. Take hold and push down on balance until top guide is clear of take-out clip. Remove terminal clip from square hole in jamb. Installing Channel Balances Insert terminal clip in square hole located in jamb. Push down on balance and secure under the take-out clip. Repeat on opposite side. Position right or left side of sash into jamb, above bottom balance guide. Swing opposite side into alignment with frame. Lower sash to engage balance. Snap take-out clips back into jamb and re-install sash stops, (not all windows have sash stops). Recommendation: replace both balances on each window
Q. How do I remove a broken one hole lock?
A. If the lock is not screwed on, it is most likely riveted on. If this is the case, you must be extremely careful to not break the glass when removing the broken lock. Using very sharp drill bit and slow speed drill, carefully drill out the old rivet to remove the broken lock. Be sure to take safety precautions such as protective gloves and safety glasses.
Q. I need a pair of sliding screens with bottom track for an existing french door pair. How does the track install on an existing aluminum threshold?
A. I believe you will only have to measure and line up where you need the track to be. You will have to drill into the aluminum track with a drill to make the holes for the screws that will be holding down the track. A #6 x 3/4" screw should be long enough
Q. With the lever operator in the fully closed position, is the window essentially locked? or do you need an additional locking mechanism installed?
A. Yes, the lever operator in the closed position does keep the window locked. On an typical size awning window there is no need for additional lock.
Q. How do you connect a coil balance to pivot shoe?
A. The coil balance's tail goes into a slot on top of the shoe, then to lock it in you just twist. This is easier to do if you remove both the balance and shoe from the window track so you can perform this easily. Otherwise, you'll be using small needle nose pliers to insert/twist the coil's tail which is extremely difficult.
Q. Any hints on removing an old rail? The Door I am working with is an 8' double pane wood door?
A. You can try to cut out the old track with a sharp chisel, but you may be able to save yourself time by using a track cover instead. If the old track is not in that bad of shape, try one of the patio door track covers that DoorsWindowsHardware.com carries. The track cover simply covers your old patio glass door track. If you decide to remove the old track and the sharp chisel is not working you will need to use small grinding tool to remove the old track.
Q. How do I determine the size of balance needed? Do I need to measure the window, size of the current balance, something else?
You need to measure the original balance to determine the size of the replacement you will need. Measure the balance exactly how you see the balance measured in the product pictures.
Q. How do I remove the plastic pivot shoe from an aluminum window? Do I just cut it or force it out with a screwdriver? If I do manage to get it out how do I replace it with the new part? Does it snaps back in?
A. On the aluminum window, first check to see that if there is a cut-out to remove the old shoe. Look behind the sash stops, you will find the sash stops in the top of the inside track for the bottom sash and the bottom of the outside track for the top sash. If there are no cut-outs you will have to make one. Possibly use a type of metal snips or a 'Dremel type tool' to cut the track. However, be careful not to cut too much of the track. Cut just enough to remove the old shoe and no longer than the sash stop so the cut-out will not interfere with the operation of the window. That way when you reinstall the sash stops, you will cover up the cut-outs. Take your time not to damage the window or hurt yourself in the process. Possibly get someone familiar with window repair work to do the job for you.
Q. I ordered and received replacement hardware from you for a patio sliding screen door. Do you have instructions on removing the old hardware and replacing it with the new parts I received? Please advise and thank you.
A. The rollers are attached on the corner ends of the patio screen door. Remove the screw that attaches the wheel housing and install the new with the existing screw. The screw that comes with this roller is the adjusting screw; the adjusting screw will raise and lower the wheel inside the roller housing to level your screen door.
Q. How do I get my sliding door off the track? I can't lift the door high enough.
A. How to replace a sliding glass door roller: Opening your patio sliding glass door should be an easy task. If your sliding door is giving you a work out every time you open it, most likely it is your rollers that are causing the problem. The rollers are located on the bottom of the sliding door and give the door the ability to slide. Often times they get dirty and wear out, making it difficult to open the door. Below are detailed steps containing all the information you will need to know to replace your patio sliding glass door rollers yourself. * Before you start, understand that you need to take the sliding glass door out of its frame to work on the rollers. The sliding glass door is heavy. You may need the assistance of another to help you remove the door. Your patio glass door will have two separate glass units. One unit is the door that you slide and the other unit is stationary. First, stand outside your house and look at your sliding glass door. If the stationary unit is between you and the sliding unit you will most likely have to remove the stationary unit so that you can get to the glass sliding unit. To remove the stationary unit, you first need to take out your screen door (if you have one). Lift one end of the screen door frame and use a screwdriver to lift the roller on the bottom of the screen door frame off of the track. Do this to both ends of the screen door and your screen door will pull out of the door frame. The stationary unit is held in place by a metal piece that runs along the bottom of the track from the corner of the stationary unit to the bottom of the side jamb (there is a chance this piece is missing but if you do have one remove it from the track). After you have removed the metal piece, look for screws holding the stationary unit frame in place. After removing all of the screws pull the stationary unit out of the door frame. You may need to create more room when you attempt to remove the sliding unit from the door frame. To create more room you can adjust the rollers on the bottom of the sliding unit. By turning the adjusting screws on the rollers clockwise the wheels move up into the sliding unit's frame giving you more room. The adjusting screws are located either at the bottom of the sliding unit's frame or in the sides of the frame. After you adjust both rollers (one on each side of the sliding unit's frame) try to remove the sliding unit from the door frame. To remove the rollers from most sliding unit's you need to remove the bottom of the sliding unit's frame. Most likely the screw that holds the roller in place is the same screw that holds the frame together. Remove the screw from both sides of the unit. Then try to remove the bottom piece of the frame off of the sliding unit; you may need to use a rubber mallet or a piece of wood and tap on the bottom of the frame until it comes off of the sliding unit. Now that you have removed the bottom of the frame you can take a close look at your patio glass door rollers. Remove one of the rollers and match it up with one of the rollers from Swisco's online catalog section of patio glass door replacement hardware. It is a good idea to replace both sliding door rollers at the same time to prevent extra wear-and-tear to one new roller, which will have to work twice as hard when paired with an old roller. After your new rollers come in, replace your old rollers with the new ones. To make it easier to install the sliding unit back into the door frame, adjust the rollers to be all the way up into the frame. Once you have the sliding unit back in the door frame you can adjust the rollers for optimal performance. Keep adjusting the rollers until the door is sliding back and forth easily.
Q. How do I get the coil balance shoe into the window track?
A. To remove/replace coil balance pivot shoes For lower/inner sash there should be a cut out at the top of master-frame, it may be behind the sash stop, if not cut to slide the pivot shoe out/in. For upper/exterior sash there should be a cut out at bottom of master frame, it may be behind the sash stop, if not cut to slide the pivot lock shoe out/in.
Q. Do you need to drill a hole for a grill clip pin or does it push into the sash?
A. We recommend our customers push the grid clips into wood frames. A drill may create too large of a hole, possibly preventing the clip from fastening properly.
Q. How do I remove my patio door?
A. Sometimes the stationary door has brackets screwed into the door and to the master frame side rail. Also the door might be caulked in, and you would have to cut the caulk away. Since it's been sitting so long it might be harder to pull it out of the track.
Q. Can anybody please tell me clearly how I can install my replacement window crank operator? I cannot find a handyman in my town who can do it for me, help!
A. STEP 1: Open the awning window by pressing on on the vertical bar located inside the crank operator slot. STEP 2: Install the operator crank handle. Secure the handle by tightening the set screw. Crank out the gear arm to a horizontal position. STEP 3: Remove the link stud screw and attach the nylon bushing. Insert the linkage through the operator slot. Line up the link stud with the hole in the torque bar arm. Re-attach the screw. STEP 4: Adjust the crank operator to line up with the installation holes in the awning window frame. Install using screws. Test the window opening and closing operation. NOTE: If the awning window is to be installed through the jamb, crank out the vents to expose the installation holes in the frame.
Q. How do you replace a channel type of window balance?
A. First, remove the sash by tilting in and lifting the window sash out of the pivot cams. With a pair of needle nose pliers, unhook the hook from the pivot cam and without tension, the balance channel should come out easily. To install just reverse the process.
Q. We have a Acorn Tilt Window installed in 1990 that won't stay up. What should I do to fix this?
A. Please take a look at the Support Sash Balance section to get started. If you cannot find the part you need, call (719) 660-1150, or e-mail Info@DoorsWindowsHardware.com for free ID service.
Q. How do I remove a broken pivot bar that broke off while still in the window? Any suggestions on how to remove the piece left in the window? It broke off at the screw hole closest to the head of the pivot bar and the rest is stuck inside the window.
A. Without actually seeing the window it's hard to figure out the problem, however what I would try is to remove the screws and try to shake out the broken pivot bar or possibly try to grab it with a needle nose or long nose pliers.
Q. We ordered is screen hanger kit and do not know how to install. The large screen seems to big and the small nail too small. how do you install these?
Q. The two hangers are installed on the top corners of the window frame with the hole side up. To install with nails, you may use a nail setter or needle nose pliers to hold into place while you're securing it into the frame. Be sure to leave enough room for the hanger to swing out and receive the screen. The two screw nails included with the hardware are used to lock the loop latches into the window sill.
